HDL, Inc. was founded in 2008. The Founders collectively have over 70 years of experience in the field of Laboratory Medicine holding key positions in renowned and respected medical, educational, and industrial institutions including the Mayo Clinic, Indiana University Medical Center, Wako Diagnostics, Berkeley Heart Laboratory and the University of Washington.
Tonya Mallory, B.S., M.S.
President, CEO and Co-Founder
- As the Executive Manager at Wako Chemicals, achieved over 100% growth for seven consecutive years ($45k-$20M)
- At Berkeley HeartLab, streamlined laboratory operations, resulting in annual decrease of $1 million/year in operating costs
- Extensive history at LabCorp (formerly Roche Laboratories)
- Led tremendous growth at BHL and Wako, including new business initiatives
- Experienced/expert consultant in medical devices, clinical laboratory, FDA and CLIA regulatory, and clinical trials
Joseph P. McConnell, Ph.D.
Chief Medical Officer and Co-Founder
- Former Director of Cardiovascular Medicine at Mayo Medical Laboratory
- Has authored over 160 leading publications
- Extensive collaboration with prestigious group of cardiologists at Mayo Clinic and other world renowned researchers in cardiovascular diseases
- Known for advancing the test menu at the Mayo Clinic and expanding the reference laboratory activities with regard to diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases
G Russell Warnick, M.S., MBA.
Chief Science Officer and Co-Founder
- Trained as a biochemist, joined in 1973 the Northwest Lipid Research Clinic (LRC) of the University of Washington, Seattle, where he became Director of the Lipoprotein Core Laboratory
- Five years at Berkeley HeartLab as VP for Laboratory Operations and Chief Scientific Officer
- Serves on advisory panels of the American Association for Clinical Chemistry (AACC) and the National Cholesterol Education Program
- Co-Editor of the Handbook of Lipoprotein Testing and author of chapters on lipid/lipoproteins in other major clinical chemistry handbooks and textbooks as well as over 200 publications, primarily in the lipid and osteoporosis fields
Satya Rangarajan, B.S., M.S.
Chief Operating Officer and Co-Founder
- Senior management positions including Vice President and CTO of Philadelphia Insurance Companies (NASDAQ: PHLY), COO of TecAccess; Director-development at CA, Inc (NYSE CA); Platinum Technologies (Nasdaq: PLAT); Dakota Imaging/WebMD
- Serves as the Managing Partner of Enlightened Capital Management, a social venture fund; ETM a technology advisory group; and CIO of Synergy Systems
- Leads numerous boards and advisory groups including Welmedix, Medical Home Plus, TecAccess, American Research Institute, Gravitonus Inc, Akshay Wellness and Customs Inc.
Stephen G. Carroll, B.S., CPA
Chief Financial Officer

- Steve is a graduate of the School of Business at Virginia Commonwealth University and the Business Advisory Services Program at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
- Steve is a specialist in advising early-stage and rapidly growing companies with thirty years of experience, in addition to his status as a Certified Public Accountant and has been recognized by his peers as a Super CPA in Business Advisory Services.
- He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Better Business Bureau, a sponsor of the Virginia Biosciences Development Center and the Dominion Resources Green Tech Incubator, and a member of the Richmond Chapter of the Association for Corporate Growth.
- Steve was an organizer and member of the initial Board of Directors of First Capital Bank, a community bank. He also regularly donates his time and talents to the City of Richmond’s Voluntary Income Tax Assistance Program, which serves the needs of underprivileged local individuals.
Michael Woodard
Chief Technology Officer
- Over a 15-year career in Information Technology, Michael has distinguished himself in enterprise software development.
- Michael has led teams in developing technologies with a positive impact in industries ranging from sports and entertainment to education and healthcare.
- As a technology leadership, Michael has served as Senior Developer at Fortune 500 companies
- A personal favorite project of his was working with Fantasy Sports Properties, Inc. where he was able to meet the likes of Terry Bradshaw, James Brown, Brett Farve, Grant Hill, and the great Wayne Gretzky
Anna McKean, MBA
Executive Vice President, Strategic Initiatives
- Served as President and COO of PartnerMD, a profitable and successful business model for providing high-quality primary care membership services that achieved a 95% patient retention rate during her six-year tenure.
- Managed profitable consulting practice at KPMG that delivered complex national and global engagement that enabled clients to achieve growth plans while meeting financial goals.
- Expertise includes business development, strategic planning, primary care practice, physician recruiting, corporate wellness, and executive health.
- Director for the Association for Corporate Growth, Richmond Chapter, and Chairman of the Sherwood Anderson Foundation.
Leslie Strickler
Vice President of Marketing
- Leslie, an award-winning marketing professional, has led high profile publicity campaigns in both private industry and government.
- She is the founder of Etre Communications, Inc., a marketing and public relations company, and was the founder of Richmond's Center of Integrative Medicine.
- Leslie has worked as Managing Director of Richmond.com, an online city guide and was Executive Editor of Enterprise Virginia magazine. Before launching her entrepreneurial venture, Strickler worked as the marketing director for Hirschler, Fleischer, Weinberg, Cox & Allen law firm. She also served as PR director for Benigol Graphics and director of volunteers for Metropolitan Hospital.
- Leslie’s honors include membership in the exclusive Omicron Delta Kappa, a national leadership honor society. She has also been recognized by Inside Business in its “Top 40 under 40” and by Richmond Magazine - 50 “Women of Power.”
Scott Blackwell
Vice President of Corporate Culture
- Scott has distinguished himself as a leader, with over 15 years of experience in human resources as a senior executive.
- Blackwell, a graduate of University of Virginia, holds a Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR) certification, and attended Senior Human Resources Management programs at Cornell University and the Center for Creative Leadership.
- He previously served as the Director of Human Resources at Williams Mullen as well as the Senior Vice President of Workforce Resources at LandAmerica Financial Group.
- He is also very involved in the local Richmond community, holding multiple board positions, such as Chair-Elect of Leadership Metro Richmond, Art 180, 1708 Gallery.
