Wellness at Work
At HDL, our employees’ health counts. We work hard and we play hard and we want our employees to be well so they can do both. Here’s how we help our employees achieve that goal!
HDL, Inc. takes a holistic approach to employees’ wellness, which prioritizes physical, financial and emotional wellness.
In addition to our excellent core benefits, we promote physical wellness through additional benefits such as gym membership reimbursement, preventative health exam incentives and discounted gym memberships. Our athletic race entry fee reimbursement program encourages employees to participate in races and reimburses them for doing so. We offer on site classes in nutrition and weight management, and smoking cessation.
HDL, Inc. also offers a great 401(k) plan and we realize how important it is to invest your income. We work hard to promote financial wellness through education and by offering classes to our employees, we help them become financially savvy at any stage in their profession. Recent classes have included tips on how to purchase a home or save for retirement.
We also encourage our employees’ emotional wellness by offering stress management events such as massages, spirited contests, celebrations and a upbeat atmosphere.

Summer Internship
All of our employees make a difference and help save lives, including our summer interns. Our summer internship program offers high school, college and graduate students a unique, hands-on experience, as they work side-by-side HDL employees to experience a true snapshot of daily life at HDL. Past internships have included opportunities in our Lab, Strategic Initiatives, Clinical Trials, Marketing, Human Resources, Clinical Health, IT and Accounting departments. On their first day at HDL, students begin a comprehensive orientation program, which provides them with a complete understanding of our business and our mission. Throughout the summer, we offer training sessions that are geared specifically towards students. We offer classes such as interviewing training, resume building, and understanding generational differences, that better prepares students for the workplace. Students are also invited to attend companywide social events, such as the company picnic, as well as intern only events.
All of our 2013 summer internship opportunities are now posted on our career openings page. These positions will be removed on March 1 and applications will be reviewed at that time. Students who are selected for interviews will be notified at that time.
HDL Summer Transition Internship Program: Helping Develop Learners at Work
Beginning in the Summer of 2013, Health Diagnostics Laboratory, Inc. will implement a unique, business-led internship program designed to prepare a small number of young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities for competitive employment. To qualify, applicants must:
- Be between the ages of 17-22 and possess intellectual and developmental disabilities
- Have independent personal hygiene and grooming skills
- Have independent daily living skills
- Exhibit professional work behavior and follow company rules and regulations
- Be able to communicate effectively
- Have interest in seeking competitive employment once done with high school
Interested participants will complete an application and interview for an opening in our Summer Transition Internship program. Selected interns will spend 3 1/2 hours a day Monday-Friday for seven weeks (July 1-August 16) working and learning at our headquarters in downtown Richmond. Within their first few days at HDL, students will partake in a comprehensive orientation program, which provides them with a complete understanding of the company’s business and mission. From there, a portion of the work day will involve classroom training covering topics such as work behaviors, life skills, corporate culture, healthy living and resume building. For the remainder of the day, student interns will work in a department within the company, side by side with HDL, Inc. employees. Students can select an internship in our lab, mail distribution center, facilities, and other departments that include clerical tasks. Supervision and training will be closely monitored by HDL, Inc. job coaches, as well as through our natural support systems within the department. At the conclusion of the internship, just as in actual employment situations, students will give written 2 weeks’ notice to their supervisor and request letters of reference to take with them. Our Summer 2013 Transition Internship Positions are available and spots are limited. These positions will be open through June 1, 2013. Applications will be reviewed at that time and selected interns will be subsequently notified to schedule an interview. If you are interested in additional information or would like to complete an application for submission, please contact Mary Townley, Vocational Job Coach, at mtownley@hdlabinc.com.
Employees in the Community
HDL is reinventing the word teamwork, both in and outside our walls. It’s obvious that not just one person makes the company or community a success; it’s the team. We emphasize the importance of respecting each other to maintain a culture where we and our neighbors thrive. In HDL’s fast-paced environment, collaboration, encouragement, and trust are how we overcome challenges. We apply the same framework to our community.
We ensure there is time to contribute in the community. We often volunteer as a team for community service projects such as HandsOn Richmond Day. You will see leagues of HDL employees running in the Massey 10k or walking for the American Heart Association. We hold in-house donation drives where we collect necessities such as food, water, and shoes to provide those in need. We have a Matching Charitable Donation Program which allows our employees’ gifts to be even more significant. As a company we make sizable gifts that promote wellness and scientific learning, to organizations such as the Science Museum of Virginia and the Richmond Sports Backers. We encourage employees to serve on boards and involve HDL in their personal missions.
